Here's the correct answer to, "Does this make me look fat?"
"Honey, that outfit just doesn't flatter your figure the way it should."
This way, you are making an intelligent response. Blame the clothes, not her figure. Then, the next time your in the hardware store with her, pick up a hammer, hold it close to your waist and ask her, "Honey, does this hammer make me look fat?" Assuming, she has a sense of humor. Good Luck!

Dude, first off, how long have you been seeing this spawn of satan? There are MILLIONS of girls out there just waiting for a semi-nice guy that won't cheat, lie, or steal from them. About 30% of them aren't completely nuts. I would suggest you dump her and start looking for a normal girl.
I too found myself with this type of woman and after a few months I took this first opportunity offered to get out, and quickly started dating that "hottie from the office". We've been married for over 5 years now, have 2 great kids, and I couldn't be happier. Sometimes you have to STAND UP for yourself, you are a man, right?

Look at your last sentence: "Why do women...?"

Guy, your problem is you aren't dealing with a woman. You are dealing with an immature female, a female with the mentality of a child.

Also, let me warn you that a lot of women never get past this stage and actually grow up. I speak with over 40 years of experience. I've had some of the fattest ugliest girlfriends in the world who in their 40's and even 50's still wanted their guy to tell them how beautiful they are. They just don't want to face reality. They want to live in a fantasy.

It can get rather tricky too. Some females can be very mature in many ways, but still cling to a childish mentality in other ways.

As far as I'm concerned, no one has truly grown up and matured until they can face and accept reality all the time, even when it's extremely painful.

This isn't to say that there aren't some really decent mature women out there. But if you go looking for another female, I recommend you place an emphasis on their ability to face reality. They're the ones that last a life time. The ones that are into fantasy are the ones that fall by the wayside. You just can't get a relationship to work with them no matter how hard you try.

Other than that, I'd like to compliment everyone who posted a comment here. The comments are some of the most thoughtful I've read on the internet.

Ahh the conundrum of the female. They want honesty but they want only the good stuff and not the natural truth. Sometimes it seems like women intentionally provoke the fight. Silence to her questions you say? St. Thomas Moore learned the hard way, silence means acceptance.
How about when she asks "Does she look good?" and I say yes, then the next statement is "She looks better than me doesn't she?" and my next answer is " Who do I kiss and hug and do things to I wouldn't do to a farm animal?" and she smiles all happy.
I'm fat, short with a size 6 shoe, thats the natural truth

When women ask those 'impossible questions,' i found being somewhat honest w/ them is the best way... however you don't always have to be as blunt as, "That makes you look fat." Try to either suggest another color (black is slimming, shades of red bring out curves, white shows bulges) or perhaps another garment made from a tougher material or with a different cut.

If you don't feel comfortable with that approach, try something off the wall like.. the dress doesn't match your shoes, or, "Red just isn't your color." or something else along those lines.

Of course...you could always just say, "You look beautiful." I mean... no one can argue with your perceptions. If she insists she looks fat.. pleading the 5th wouldn't hurt.

I think the proper thing to say should have been something constructive rather than critical, and "chubby" is critical in any woman's eyes.

"You aren’t fat and you look good in the dress” should have been replaced by something slightly more truthful, but gentle, and hinting at the possibility of improving oneself. "It looks great, but it would look even better if we worked off a little of this (touches hips) at the gym." An alternative would be (and this is if the dress truly makes the girlfriend look fat) "I don't think this style suits you" (bonus points for the fashion advice!)

okay i am a woman and this story pissed me off and not because i think the girl was right.

he said she was chubby he did not call her a sea cow. no women are just dumb. and i am a woman saying this . we trick guys into these situations by putting them in akward spots. he tries to lie to us to boost our ego but do we let him no we keep on fighting him. soon enough he gives up the fight and does not complient us. it does not give us the right to kick him out of bed. and then we have the nerve to stay mad for days !

my boyfriend and i have been together for 2 years and yes we fight but at the end of the day no matter what is said he is still in the bed .we have a theroy of not going to bed mad . women need to let go of their bags of tricks looking for any reason to fight its just dumb.

grrrr i think a man has the right to say what he thinks with out the consequences. lord know i do.

It's the oldest female trick in the book. You either tell her the truth and say what you did...with dire consequences, or lie your butt off for brownie points. I personally don't have such a HUGE problem with my self esteem that I would have to do that to a guy. I take my fella shopping with me a lot. He has great taste in what works for me, sometimes better than I do. All women are not created equal, but blessed are the ones who don't need their ego stroked all of the time either.
